First Playable Evaluation

The goal of the computer game first playable phase is to demonstrate that your team has spent between 5-10 hours working on your game. Depending on the capabilities of your team, the actual tangible results of this effort will vary. As a result, grading for this phase will be fairly subjective, and lenient. The only surefire way to lose points in this phase is to not submit anything.

The following elements seem reasonable to expect in games submitted during this phase.

  • A Game Maker file (.GMK)
  • At least one room, with some preliminary level design in the room
  • A few objects, including a player object
  • The ability to move the player object, if even in a limited way
  • Some ability for the player object to interact with their world (firing, jumping, picking up objects, etc.)

We do not expect, and in fact recommend against having any sound in your game at this time. Large sound files are strongly correlated with corrupted Game Maker files, and hence a wise strategy is to include sound into your game at the very end of development.

We do not expect a complete, or fully playable game at this point. However, if a team submits a mostly complete game, we will provide some feedback on its playability and game design.
